Alisa’s Aliases: Uncovering Identity Through 3D Motion Graphics and Typography

This project consists of a series of animations representing my different identity characteristics. Each asset uses typography and 3D motion graphics to visualise each persona. As the versatility of identity is the main theme of the project, each outcome of the series is an animation of the word ‘alias’, which not only acts as a unifying control element within the series but is an anagram of my name – Alisa, reinforcing the notion of each animation being representative of my personal identity characteristics.

Playful – to embody a playful persona, a rounded, bolded typeface was used, creating a positive and approachable aesthetic that is playful. The inflated text represents a balloon, typically associated with positivity being playful in nature.
Resilient – the fluid and dynamic ‘Meta Type’ was designed by me to represent resilience through its organic elements, which reinforce flexibility and growth. The overflowing metaballs over a chrome surface show the ability to transform and adapt to change.
Gentle – a hand-drawn typeface with curved edges is used to resemble a gentle personality. Its organic feel and italicisation establish a sense of a slow flow. The fur growing and flowing in the wind symbolises softness and approachability.
Groundbreaking – a futuristic font with sharp lines and angled forms visualises a cutting-edge persona. The animation symbolises the challenge of pre-established norms (outside) with innovation (inside) which is revealed through shattering (groundbreaking).
The overall outcome is executed as a digital campaign aimed at designers and design studios. The lead asset containing all six aliases is hosted on my portfolio, visualised in the video.

Duality of a Day

Duality of a Day is an exploration of the interpolation points between opposing principles of ‘day/night’, and ‘light/dark’, through the photographic documentation of an urban area for every hour of a duration of twelve hours. Mainly, this project visualises the juxtaposition of the light and dark within a building during the day – when it is light outside, it is dark inside, and vice versa.

This outcome consists of two physical objects made of thirteen acrylic layers: twelve interpolation points (or hours representing the time of day) and a layer with an engraving of two characters sitting on the edge of the building. The characters act as a symbolic element representing yin and yang (light and dark, white and black). This symbol further reinforces the commentary on people’s ever-changing transition between dark and light during day and night, supporting the concept of a contrasting duality of the day.

The lead outcomes layers are not attached, allowing viewers to explore each image on the layer, making it a tactile object. The square acrylic sheets are packaged within a transparent acrylic case, providing visibility of the outcome along with the title.

Interpolation images for each hour were printed using a lithographic press on a 3mm acrylic sheet and laser cut to create depth within the stack and give a partial visualisation of all interpolation points simultaneously.

The secondary outcome of the cut-outs is glued together to show the layers in a more structured manner as a single artefact structure.

Месяц – Palina

This project is a typographic, mixed media lyrics animation of a portion of the song Месяц by Palina. This project explores various analogue and digital techniques/applications within mixed-media animation. Combined with analogue spray painting and collage processes, the animation also uses code to generate visuals from audio sound waves.

The visual aesthetic of the animation is inspired by the constructivist movement, with a grunge twist – embodying the emotional state of the singer Palina during the month of an authoritarian President Lukashenko being re-elected, bringing back violence and absurdity to her life.
